Think about it like this.... What if it had gone the other way and a driver had swerved to avoid him and ended up crashing and dying as a result of trying not to hit him?
This ^.
One of my employee son's races "saturday night" dirt cars and another employee actually used to own a company that built dirt cars. They're actually relatively safe if you stay in the car. 1/4" thick steel plate, Hans device, Halon systems, etc. They rarely have fatalities, or even bad injuries. These cars don't go nearly as fast as Cup cars either.
In NC and SC if you leave your car while other cars are racing on the track you're immediately disqualified. Multiple times and you get banned from the track. If you start a fight with another driver you get arrested immediately and banned for life. They have TONS of cops at these tracks because these races don't pay shit (maybe $1000 if you win) and a lot of these guys are barely sponsored so if they get wrecked it's coming out of their pocket so they get even more angry when it happens. For example, my family company sponsored our employee's sons car and get our logo on the rear spoiler and a smaller logo near the gas cap and it cost us only $1,000 for the entire season.
