There was no troll, it was a genuine question. One you failed to answer as well. Props to GFist for being the only one who tackled a possible answer (where there certainly are no clear answers).

That said, his comments about shootings in other countries not getting media attention the same way they do in the states isn't entirely accurate. I know when we have it happen in Canada it often gets international attention (such as the recent shooter in Moncton). The states might offer a different kind of attention, which leads me to what I believe might be partially to blame -- a culture of fear. I'm definitely seeing a lot of it in this thread, on both sides of the argument.

Also, I think Rok's numbers might in fact be correct. They seem to vary from source to source with a lot of shootings being labeled as gangland violence instead. It would come down to personal definition, I suppose. Can we agree more than a dozen is fucked up beyond belief?

I dunno if we can. My problem with the entire "gun control" debate is that when compared to other issues, it's really not a big deal.

Look at the texting while driving fatality numbers. Literally every single time I get behind the wheel of my car, I see other drivers on their phones while driving. This is despite the fact that CA adopted a law a cpl years back making it illegal.

If you want to think more globally, how about the Fukushima nuclear meltdown? That shit is really, REALLY bad. And Japan has done massive cover ups to try and hide how bad it really is. I just watched an investigative report on it today. It was scary. They say it's likely going to turn out to be the worst nuclear disaster in human history.

Or how about global climate change. My point is simply this. In one of the richest countries in the world with 300 million plus people, with a culture that's centered around amassing personal wealth and capitalism, there are other far greater fucked up things going on than gun violence.

Problem with the gun violence issue is the media and something called an availability cascade. If you're interested, go here to check out what that is.

Basically, everyone thinks it's a way bigger deal than it is because of non-stop media coverage. I linked it in the MRAP thread but go look at leading causes of death in the US. Gun deaths are not even in the top 15 causes of death in the US.

As for shootings that don't cause death....I dunno. I've never really looked into the statistics on that.

No. No it isn't. Holy shit, do not get me started on that unless there is a new thread. You know who don't think it's a big deal? Scientists. Do you know why? Because it isn't. Christ, I would love to see this report and see who they have commenting on this.

I'll send ya the link in a pm. I'm not saying I necessarily believe what they said but they put forward some pretty compelling evidence. I haven't had the opportunity to search other sources to see if there's any additional validity to what they said. But either way, my point still stands that there are lots of other issues in the United States that are much more important than a few psychos freaking out shooting people.

To which I'll go back to my original point, the reason they are freaking out and shooting people is symptomatic of much of the problems in the US. The culture of fear.

Pretty much, nobody really cares about the level of violent crime in this country though. This gun issue is suddenly interesting to people because of these flashy media hyped mass shootings, which are just that same culture of fear and insecurity acting on a society of attention whoring special snowflakes.
