I could see banning people from owning guns who have documented mental illness, similarly to how felons can't purchase guns. Ignore Rok. He's flipped into idiot shit talk mode again. Can't come up with anything worthwhile to say so resorts to personal attacks and shit talk. They actually passed laws like this in California this year and contrary to Roktheory, I am all for it. There's also an assembly bill going through the legislature right now in CA that would allow for gun violence restraining orders. Essentially, if someone feels you are capable of gun violence, they go file the appropriate paperwork with the court. Just like a regular restraining order, a judge hears the case and if the petitioner can provide sufficient evidence to satisfy the court, the order is issued. At that point, the cops can legally come to your house and seize your guns. I am actually fine with this as well and I hope it passes. If this law had existed a couple months ago, Elliot Rodgers might have had his guns taken away before he killed people. I think people that have a history of mental illness should not be able to own or purchase guns. Similarly, I think someone with a history of violence and/or who makes credible threats of future violence should have their guns taken away too. Wait, wut? If some joe thinks you are capable of gun violence he can get the court to send jackboots to your house and take your property?

Yeah deadly, goes hand in hand with that NYC spy on your neighbor crap they started pushing last year. Its absolutely insane, the same way cops that are called to a domestic dispute call a neighbor called in upon hearing two people yell at each other; on their own private property, within their own house and the cops directed to always take one or both parties to jail, its nonsense. The jail system is big business.
Many of these laws popping up are less about safety and more about getting people into the various systems. Similarly, more and more taxes are being levied on everything these days, its not about the environment or safety, its about finding new revenue streams.
If it was really about the betterment of the welfare of the people basic needs like food, clothing, water etc. wouldn't be taxed. We already have a carbon tax to "help the environment" and there are new regulations being put in place to even tax drivers by the miles they drive. Pretty soon air will be taxed, as you can see by these examples its not about safety or betterment of the citizenry.

Well first off, it's not law yet. It's pending in the legislature. It's really a political play that's come about a result of the Santa Barbara shooting (Elliot Rodger). Who knows if it will pass? 2nd, no. It works like a standard restraining order. Anyone who petitions for the order has to go before a judge and provide credible evidence that the respondent poses a threat. These things are public record and show up on background checks, which effect employment opportunities, so judges don't just issue them on a whim. Also, it includes a provision that makes it a crime to seek a gun violence restraining order and submit knowingly false information. Text of the most recent version is here if you care to read it.
