Damn people make this topic so complicated.
If you feel that it is your right and responsibility to protect yourself, then you should be allowed to do so with the maximum degree of force you have a possibility of encountering. With our current technology level, that is generally a firearm.
If you do not want to take that level of responsibility, it is your right to not do so. You may then place your faith in the current level of law enforcement.
The firearm is also a great equalizer (insert Samuel Colt reference here). My wife carries her Glock daily. She has undergone formal training as well as training with me and my friends (mostly veterans and some LEOs). She has some ability with unarmed combat, but I have much more peace of mind knowing she can drop a dirtbag in a couple heart beats if she has to.
I myself also carry a 1911 daily. I have not had to draw in as a civilian and hope I never have to. It is an option I intend to always have in case a situation warrants it.
Oh and Fly... personally I wouldn't go with Kimber. I think it's kinda the Apple of firearms. More expensive than what it is really worth. I'd give Springfield, Colt, or Sig a look over Kimber (the warranties speak for themselves).

Yeah I have only been able to get my paws on 2 kimber 1911s... loved the feel of them both..
When first looking into a .45 it was at the Colt/Sig but I have not found anyone with one willing to let me pop 10 mags off in a sitting to see how I like it..
TBH the .45 is really.. a non-factor & simply a desire thing..
If I can't get the job done with the 9mm than I have completely fucked the situation & should likely be dead anyways

@Moxie She's ran ~8k rounds through her Glocks and nary a hitch. I can count on one hand the number of FTF and FTE, usually just due to a bad round or a worn out magazine spring. I've never fully understood some of the Glock hate, the ones I've shot ran like machines.
@Fly Of course shot placement is everything. With some of the new rounds out, the gap between 9mm and bigger bore rounds isn't as big a deal. It's not so much the .45 part of the 1911 that I like, but the feel and single action.

Yup & that's the exact reason for my desire..
With the 9 as said every round in the box unless there is something seriously off.. picked up the 1911 & full squeeze was still in 50% or better at 15m - those are really strong results as we know it shouldn't take more than 2 to completely stop an unarmored target.. meaning stopping power to acc is impossible not to consider looking at the 1911.
There is a reason why its the go to right lol..
I have never understood glock hate either.. they are like the AKs of pistolas.. all the stopping power you want out of a gun that can put up with a lot of wear & tear before failure.. Also how cheap a Sig Glock is... I don't know seems like a logical pick up to me

I am more into the Road House style self defense. It involves a knife hidden in the toe of your cowboy boot mixed with the ability to bare hand throat rip a human male to death.

This. Read the reviews from trusted sources on guns you're considering purchasing. I wanted a glock but ended up going with a Ruger SR9. Almost identical to a glock, just as reliable, better safety features (I plan to train my son with it), and it was $150 cheaper than a glock. Kimber is a nice brand, no doubt. But for the same money, you can get a 1911 that's just as nice for cheaper.

Sig P229 is a good one. See if you can try one out sometime.

Most 1911 owners hate glocks, and most glock owners hate 1911s, but I have one of each, and I love them both =)

Very few 1911s come even close to the fit and finish. The trigger alone makes it worth 100 times even my sig max michel edition. The rest of this conversation is about polymer guns which feel like toys and interest me not
