It is true - there are nuances in every sport that make them great. Also, hockey players make the least amount of money of any professional athlete in the USA (out of NBA/NFL/MLB/NHL), so I can see how kids would be less inclined to idolize hockey players who don't have the "bling" that basketball players, for instance, do.
