Have you ever seen a 3 year old come into the OR with a bullet in his spine because we are so rabid to protect our right to bear arms that they're easier to buy than pot?

How often does this happen where you live? I rarely ever hear stories about people accidentally discharging assault rifles and shooting other people.

I'd wager a fair amount of money that nationally, the majority of gunshot wounds that come from assault rifles are due to criminal activities involving guns that are not purchased legally. The type of person that is likely to use an assault rifle to shoot people is a criminal, and felons can't own guns period, let alone assault rifles.

This brings me to my next point, which is this. People who are planning to use assault rifles for criminal activities are not going to be deterred from buying one just because they are illegal. Ever watch the first 48? You think those 16, 17 and 18 year old kids with long criminal records are purchasing those guns legally? No...they are not. What this translates into is that responsible people, like me, will not be able to purchase weapons of the equivalent destructive power as those who would use them against me illegally. I'm being put at a disadvantage.

It happens a fair amount. I live in West Palm so we have Top 6 here and a few other notorious gangs. I actually saw a show on the History Channel the other day about West Palm, and they referred to it as a "deadly killing zone". Gangs open fire on police cars on a regular basis, and one of them has an initiation where you open fire on someone random in public. I never said that any of these ideas could "stop" it, but there have to be a variety of things we can bunch into one that can at least cut down on this. It's like having a car alarm, they'll still break in if they really want it, but you will also deter a lot of people. Up in Wellington they have gun shows on a regular basis. The guns are purchased "legally" and then resold to the kids that use them for other reasons. So essentially they're being bought legally.
