They may push for the technology (and Japan seems to love anything new and innovative) but it will ultimately be the consumer that decides and right now there isn't a demand for it. There was a surge when Avatar first came out but since then things have petered out.

Several theaters I've been to recently charge the same amount for a 3d show as a 2d. Hugo is a good example of this. The 3d is quite well done yet the 2d showings are seeing higher numbers in spite of the same price and show times.

Gaming might change that, but it's far to early to call.

Oh, and those TV's you mentioned that are in Japan are already up here in Canada. They're probably floating around down there too. It's early technology, sure, but so far the look isn't that impressive.
