He was shot because that is the only decision that SHOULD be made in this type of situation. The last thing any country would want is to put that guy on trial. There would be kidnappings\ransoms setup by al qaeda world wide. Saying to release him or people will die. He would be held up in court for years upon years and politically. His name wouldn't fade away into obscurity. It would be plastered all over the news until the day he put to a hanging. In which he would have died anyway. It would be an absolute political disaster.
