About 90% of the people i know who smoke pot, also don't drink. It's not a small minority of the population either, it's just a chunk of society that can't be very open about the things they enjoy. It's pretty natural for that chunk to fly under the radar because they don't draw a lot of attention to themselves. They're people you would otherwise be like "oh" if they told you they smoke pot.
Your friend or any other example you throw out there, still has no relevance imo that pot (the most easily attainable, most socially acceptable "drug" out there) is a gateway. It just so happens that people, unless totally indoctrinated, will do the things they want to do regardless of law. I know people who have gone their whole life without ever trying sushi. They don't have anything against people who do eat sushi either. Just saying it only makes sense for people willing to do a lot, will start out with what's easy to get. In my experience there's just way more people who smoke pot, and only smoke pot.
Most of those people were not only unwelcoming to anything else, if anything else was ever brought into the house of a pothead, that person would never be welcomed back. Most potheads I know if not all, get entirely offended when pot is lumped in with "drugs", because they have totally separated themselves from that culture. I think the biggest difference is you don't "need" pot to "feel well", like you most likely would with the same amount of use with anything else. If I needed to quit my job and get another one, and stop smoking weed for 3 months to pass a piss test it would be no problem as it hasn't my entire adult life. Or the 5 years I stopped smoking pot when I was living with my brother, out of respect for him preferring it not be smoked around him.
I grew up in San Diego, I doubt there's a lack of availability there and anywhere else. Probably just that people come together with other like-minded people naturally. So, where your position and opinion come from are based on the 'circle' of people you have experience with and so do mine. They're just totally different.

Haha look at all the stoners get mad when I call it a gateway drug. You are of course entitled to your opinion. I think it's simply human nature. You typically participate in socially "unacceptable" or taboo activities gradually, or any activity that you causes apprehension. For example serial killers usually don't start with humans, people usually start with kissing and later graduate to sex, and thieves usually start out small and graduate to bigger things. I believe its the same with drugs. Perhaps it would make you feel more comfortable if I said how many people you think started with coke or e or Meth etc? I think most peeps start with alcohol or weed and move up from there. I think its less "scary" to start with less serious drugs. Once you cross the line with the small stuff its easier to cross it on a more serious level. It's not always that simple of course. Depends on the people you hang with and. Other things.

Yup tax free cuz it's under the table.
And yep Dhal, these dispensaries are doing it under the table.
I'm in agreement with you on most everything you said, and I don't even smoke bud.
In addition I would add that marijuana is a gateway drug. How many people you know that smoked pot and stopped there? I'm not sayin it never happens, but it's rare. Most people continue on from there. For me, it was acid, E, and coke. This was in my teenage years of course.
I feel that if you legalize it and take away it's "taboo", less kids will do it out of rebellion. Consequently, I think less kids would then be moving on to harder drugs. I went with E and Acid first... tried pot years later and didnt like it at all. Pot is the beer of the drug world. Taste like shit and gives you a shitty high.

The gateway drug myth has been around since your parents were smoking pot. It's old school propaganda that has been dis-proven by multitude of independent studies in over a dozen different countries, all with different drug policies.
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?start=20&q=marijuana+gateway+effect&hl=en&as_sdt=0,10&as_vis=1
The #1 contributor to the gateway effect is socioeconomic status. The poorer you are, in the poorer area you live, the higher chance you will use illicit drugs. How many people who know make over $50k a year use crack? How many of them smoke pot? Why does this gateway effect only happen to people in the ghetto or trailer parks?
That's the problem with most issues today. They require people to study and investigate it independently instead of relying on 60 year old propaganda passed down from parents and teachers, which then infiltrates the next generation of politicians who push the same archaic agendas.
We should be taxing all the fucking stoners and giving that money to our teachers and cops. Instead of taking away their benefits like we are now.

blah blah blah drugs are bad and evil and misunderstood and fiscally lucrative and ...
Personally I think: to each their own and I would be personally OK if all drugs were made legal provided certain public services were denied upon evidence of drug use... i.e. If someone overdoses, the paramedics aren't taking them anywhere.
I don't care how un-PC that sounds, as long as tax payer money isn't spent on treating or fixing drug related problems, I am all for people fucking up their lives. That said: those who can get away with using whatever they want and still function (and not be a danger to public, i.e., driving while fucked up), go for it.
I'm sure there are large logic holes here, so bring it.
p.s. Rain - this wasn't a direct reply to your post, just a generic comment on the entire topic.

It's pretty nutty here in Denver. You can't drive more than a block without seeing a dispensary. It's pretty much legal. I have an edible lisense which allows my caregiver to grow 45 plants a month for me. The prices have gone way down to which is really nice.

Never smoked a cig.
Smoke pot and drink.
Idiots and people with too much money are the ones to use it as a gateway.

HEYOOOOOO If I would have known you'd get so pissed I'd have told you that you were entitled to your own opinion a long time ago. Not going to get into the geeky "who's madder bro" argument with you. Your words speak for themselves. Spoke less pot, your mood swings won't be as severe. :-) And you'd be able to come up with insults better than wigger faggot. That's pretty fuckin weak.

Nothing wrong with pot. Only idiots use it as a gateway. Those are the idiots who are followers and weak minded fools who would fuck up something eventually in their life, could be hard drugs, could be alcohol.
Cigs and alcohol are far more damaging than weed. I've done enough of cigs myself to know since I have gotten myself back in shape, it has made it far harder, just on the lungs themselves, let alone cancer and who knows whatever complications I may have later. Alcy is pretty self destructive for many many people and I've never heard anyone die of weed, but alcy and cigs? haha.
Oh and to EE who said he gets a shitty high from weed... maybe if you have done a bunch of other drugs before weed that is true, but get a hold of some Master Kush and you may change your mind.
Fuckin Regan (who I still have some respect for) and his starting his hardcore crusade on the war on drugs and hate for weed hahahaha. Ridic.
