I'm still having issues with my PC as I posted in a previous thread. I've messed with it more and it I've got a feeling it's the motherboard. It will take me more time to isolate the issue or issues then it would to just upgrade my PC. So I've decided I'm going to upgrade my Motherboard, RAM, and CPU. I'd like to order the parts as soon as tomorrow on newegg. I had a couple questions:

- If I replace my MB, RAM, and CPU do I need to re-install win7 or can I just boot it up like normal after assembling it.

- It looks like Asus is popular motherboard. Should I get 1366 socket type? Also, is there anything else i should look for in a MB?

- i5 or i7? I noticed the chips have lots of different features, which are the important ones to get?


Any specific recommendations?

I should purchased a Asus. Never had problems with them as they have always been top notch.

If you create a new computer, especially from a new Mobo, you will definitely want to reformat and reinstall win7.

1366 is the newer architecture. If you want the best and for the i7, go with a 1366. These mobos usually have like 3 PCIx slots, hold like 24gig+ of ram etc. More pricey though.

i5 is cheaper but still nice and you can still get a i7 with a cheaper 1156 mobo.

I replaced all of that and windows 7 booted up fine...it doesn't blue screen like the previous versions. It still would probably be a good idea to do a format/reinstall, but mine has worked fine so far. I am just too much of a lazy ass to reinstall everything.

Then I'll stick with my GTX 260 until I decide to splurge for a new card in a month or two. What do you guys think with this setup? Is there anything you would change? Do I need a new hard drive to take advantage of this motherboard or anything else?

Why not splurge on another 260 video card and sli those bitches for cheap but getting you much better performance.

Everything else looks goods and yes reinstall win7 on a new mb.

I noticed the motherboard supports SATA 6GB while both my hard drives are only SATA 3GB. Does it make a big enough difference that I should purchase another hard drive to run my OS?

imo what i did is get a smaller ssd w/ the extra 2 yr wty (usually your writes will be maxxed at 2.5-4 yr mark from what i understand)

the ssd was 125ish on black friday, and it was 25 bucks for a +2 yr wty on top of the 3

i use a 7200 rpm 400 hdd 3GB as my "internal storage" for moving games from ssd back and forth, and where i save my downloads; and a 640 external esata hdd for moving back and forth internal storage/media center for tv. the 60G can hold win 7, 1 MMO, and about 2-3 bigger fps'. the fast load times are good for limited weap first selections. also the 120-160 are reasonably priced these days. if you do something like this 3GB or 6GB isnt too big of a deal as those are the only times i think there's a visible difference. you'll xfer data across the network over faster but remember, your router and everything connected to it has to support those speeds too.

You should be fine when upgrading your processor and motherboard to not have to do anything with your hard drive/operating system. Windows, since XP has been plug and play for the most part.

To answer your question about socket type, it is important to match your socket type up with the CPU that you buy... IE, if your chip is a 1366 then yes you get a 1366 mobo. Asus is a good brand.


I'd go with the i7.

I've upgraded and I'm loving the new upgrades. After removing my old parts I realized the fan was lose and it could have been an issue of the CPU overheating or maybe the motherboard got messed up. I'm not sure the issue but if you want to pay for shipping I'll send you my old parts. I've got a motherboard, CPU, and RAM I'm not using.
