you can get the dimensions of your mousepad and go to a vinyl company (sign makers etc.) and have them get you basically a black sticker with white dots about 1/3" apart from each other; with that dpi it will work..probably only cost you 3 bucks.

this probably negates everything good about your mousepad which would work with optical no problem..my other post here advises if you have a laser mouse to get a pad specifically designed for laser or you most likely will run into issues. with laser i used desk for a while, but the grains in the desk caused jumps and skipping.
