i suggest if you're using laser mouse use a big pad designed for them. if optical get something big. i use the exact mat from razer..each side is a different surface (speed/control). it's kind of cheesie but it's been working great for me and is in the same condition it was when i bought it ages ago.  razerpads

i'll be buying a Steelseries QcK soon. Probably the Heavy. I've asked the same question on a few forums, and invariably it usually comes doown to the QcK or iCEMAT. I'd get an iCEMAT, but I don't want to hear the clack clack or have my hand stick to it.

Get yourself a nice wooded desk. I've used that setup for years, and works great.

I used my mouse on a wood surface. Then I wore it glass smooth from the mouse movements and now the laser detects like crap on it and I had to go back to a mouse pad. =((

I wish I could use a mouse pad, but I'm all over the place with my mouse. A confined area would drive me nuts. 
  I hate to hear that happening Sherkas, but I guess I'm been extra lucky with mine.The pads are getting worn down, but still the signal stays strong.
