I use two methods. External drive for the majority of my stuff, and off-site backup for all the stuff I don't want to lose at all. You could always setup a RAID1 array, and store your stuff there.
Yeah, platter exchanges suck, but you can't expect much more than a failure from the bleeding edge hard drives (At least that's how it's been since 500GB drives came out).
