If religion facilitates becoming a better person, then I hardly think believing in it doesn't mean you waste your time on earth. In fact, the opposite could be argued for religion. From my experience in religion I am positive it would make God very unhappy if we wasted our lives on earth, this doesn't mean spending every waking moment evangelizing or in prayer, it does mean being a normal human-being, and sharing their knowledge of Jesus however they see fit. (which is in the image of God), it even means relaxing and playing Shadowbane and UO.
As for a lack of character, I would argue that it's harder to give your life to a being whom you have never seen, but you know s/he's there (faith). I have faith in alot of things that aren't visible. gravity, wind, and sound. I have faith in friendships and relationships, none of these mean I don't think for myself or somehow am fundamentally less-equal than you in any respect. We are all equal.
