I, like unlike you didn't start out as a believer. I was trained that churches were brainwash and not to get sucked in by my father who's opinion I respect. I re-read my post and certainly came off a bit brash, I apologize.
To undermine an individuals belief shows a lack of respect for them and ultimately is selfish. I choose to see your points because I know they are valid thoughts, feelings, emotions and intellect.
For a person to see the way I do, fundamental truths are to be established, clearly you don't share the perspective and have no interest in humoring what I believe is truth. There is nothing wrong with this and don't take it as such.
My voodoo is the product of my experience and maturity. And I don't claim it to be everyone's. Christians fundamentally of all religions believe the following, feel free to comment on the listed topics:
- Christ died for man's sins, God gave his only son so that man might be able to be with God in eternity.
- Christ rose again on the third day -- this is the meat and potatoes, believing that Christ rose again changes Jesus from a "good guy with good teachings" to something more ethereal.
- Accepting Jesus into your heart and repenting of your sin brings everlasting life ***
*** more on this subject. Christians of all denominations are divided on this, to some it means "Everlasting Salvation" and others don't believe in it. Everlasting salvation is the notion that once you become a believer you cannot through deeds "lose" your salvation by wrong doing. To other Christians, they believe you can in essence lose salvation and after being saved go to hell. It's sad people can be divided by such petty things, but it happens.
I am a raging liberal, and am pretty undecided on the topic of abortion, I am more pro-choice currently, because I choose to think for myself.
Pigeon-holing anyone into a archetype you have setup for "Christians" is silly. Instead judge others by the content of their character. A statement I hope we all can agree is a good one.
