Im a big fan of Hydrogen power personally. The problem is the actual producing of the hydrogen. On a dollar basis the same amount of gasoline is much cheaper than the electricity used to make its equivalent in hydrogen.
The US could produce the equivalent amount of energy to the fuel we use by putting up wind turbines. The cost would be about 20 billion dollars initially to put up approx 8000 Turbines (at about 2.5 million each). The turbines have an easy lifespan of 30 years.
The US burns about 47.5 billion dollars in oil a year (130 million dollars worth per day) with 25% of that number being burned up on the roads. That equals about 20 million barrels per day (730 million per year) with only 5 million barrels per day (325 million dollars worth) used for transportation.
The Turbines have a easy lifespan of 30 years and would create enough electricity to produce enough hydrogen for our transportation needs.
Implementation would be a fucking nightmare, but it could be done.
At our current rate of consumption the US will burn about 22 billion barrels of oil in a 30 year period (1.43 trillion dollars worth).
Each turbine would produce the same energy equivalent to 2.2 million barrels of oil in that same 30 year period. which at 65 dollars per barrel would be 143 million dollars worth. Without the pollution.
