If the auto industry thinks an investment in developing a specific type of automobile is worthwhile, they're going to do it. Regardless of who is lobbying for what. There is a viable niche market for alternative vehicles. And not surprisingly, some manufactures cater to that market! Ford and GM aren't going to start mass-producing alternatively fueled cars, because there simply isn't a large enough market for them yet.
To the disappointment of many conspiracy theorists the car guys and the oil guys don't get together and say, "hey, you keep making cars that use refined gasoline, and we'll keep refining it."
