I was pissed in the first 48 hours of the disater on the Gulf coast thinking that there was no international effort to assist (beyond a couple of usuals who trade help back & forth with the states).
I then did a google news search "foreign relief hurricane". Everywhere in the world, except the US it is listed and they are providing an immense amount of aid. Sadly, the US media will not report it.
Not sure if it is national pride, or whether the world has just destroyed one of the bastion arguments for xenophobia by the conservatives. Perhaps the media is too busy showing destruction (hell bad news sells ad space better than good news anyday). But either way, the US thinks nobody is helping due to whatever. In reality, the internation effort is unprecedented. This amounts to possibly the largest coordinated international relief efforts ever.
It is not any type of slight on the US, as the magnitude of this disaster would overwhelm anyone. Here are some of the contributions so far from the 60 countries providing aid:
- Quatar 100 million $$$
- Kuwait 500 million $$$ in petroleum products
- Germany 1 million gallons of refined gas / day, Emergency Staff ,Cash
- Britain , MRI's, Cash, Fuel
- Mexico, Several million $$, Water, Trucks, Medical Staff
- France, Hospital Ship, Mobile EMT Staff, Water Plants, Power plants etc... (big list)
- Japan, Germany, Canada, Venezuela etc... approx 8.4 billion dollars in fuel (raw & processed)
- Canada, Fleet of ships with powerplants, military scuba (to help with levees), water plants, mobile hospital, search & rescue teams, 5000 staff for Red Cross and Salvation Army, 1/2 million gallons of gasoline / day, Airline (Air Canada flying stricken peeps from day 1), Strategic Medical Storehouse (shipping the strategic medical supply from Canada to the US), etc... (long list).
- Small countries (Sri Lanka, El Salvador, Honduras...long list) Cash + material assistance.
- Cuba 1100 Medical + EMT staff
- Iran Cash + material assistance
- Many many others...hundreds of millions in red cross hel. Friend + foe alike are contributing.
- The assistance is measured in billions, not millions.
The list is very long, and simply quite amazing. Americans have wondered for decades that if something happened in the USA, would anyone help?
Part of your answer is listed above, it is a great big fat YES, and in abundance. The world has leaned on the shoulder of the US for 50+ years. Now that the US needs a hand, the world did not forget.
America got it's answer, and it is a good answer. Yup, the world cares more than you can imagine.
And all of you find the truth, don't rely on the pipefed media. Dig, and you will soon realize what it truely going on which your local media will not say.

Arab Legue Stated.....
Arab world should support the United States, which "always expresses solidarity with nations that face natural catastrophes and extends most of the aid they receive."
Arab countries are providing over 1 billion dollars in assistance alone.
This include Syria, Iran and other foes doing what they can.
Even North Korea is kicking in.
And we thought Arabs wouldn't help at all or just laugh.... (I personally thought that would be the case).
Americans should be stunned and feel like the worlds greatest complement ever is being behooved apon the USA. And it is well deserved due to Americas efforts worldwide.
Ok, now it's time for assweasels like Jobu to dig in and find an ugly nugget in there and make it all look shitty (neo-cons must preserve xenophobia...all foriegners.... .are.... .evil... .and... .thankless......).....

We deal with the rulers of the Arab countries, not the citizens or the clergy. In some instances, these groups are very different. The rulers have to be diplomatic. Look at Pakistan, the rulers have no problem with assisting us in various ways (not just relief effort) but the citizens have huge problems with it.
But I am greatful for the contributions nonetheless.
On a side note, Houston had so many random volunteers to help out with the influx of people from N.O. that they were turning people away by Saturday.

O'Reilly actually went down the list and reported who had given us how much. The other media wants to make us believe the rest of the world doesn't care because of Bush. Interesting how Kuwait topped the list.

we have not accepted cuba's offer. partially 'cause we don't have relations, and partly 'cause they refused our aid after a hurricane wrecked their isle.
at this point, i think its tit 4 tat...but im pretty sure they only offered so we can refuse <img src="/~stretch/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
don't be too surprised
