the ninja is a sport bike. It doesn't sound like you want to speed around. Plus those things are kinda heavy for a sport bike(if i remember correctly), and not as easy to learn on. I would suggest getting a more cruiser style bike, or maybe something sort of in between(street sport). I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Suzuki and Honda have made some decent 750 or 800 street sports, I know that.
First thing you want to decide is the style of bike you want. Then you can look into more specific models in your price range.

oh yah. i think you will get bored of a 250 in a month, unless your coordination is as bad as your CS skills.

and to elaborate some more... from the research ive been doing, the insurance threshold of price spikes is right where it hits 600cc.
Im sure most of the seasoned riders know this, but thats why these japanese bikes come in sizes like 598 or 599, but still call them 600's. Just to help the riders escape the insurance crunch.
im looking to escape the insurance spike too... im not fucking made of money.
I went to the kawasaki dealer today for lunch just to browse around, and I can say that the 500 caught my eye really quick... while the 250 was, well.. so-so... "eh... i guess thats a bike" was my reaction. only thing was, when I looked at the price tag, there was about a 2k difference, and thats definitely something to consider.
the cruisers looked nice too, but im definitnely not going to fucking drop 8k on a cruiser, when all i want to do is just ride around for fun.....

tenchi get the kawi 636.... its a 600 class... as of course every one said dont get a 250... any reason you hear for reasons not to get the 250 will be true...
not sure why maniak was thinking its hard to learn on a street bike. My very first bike was a 1990 kawasaki 600 ninja
if my advice is any thing... I say you get a cheap used bike to learn on first. to see how you like it and for you to mess up when you lay it down or any thing. Cause some people after there first really scarey moment on a bike will quit riding... then if you get a cheap crappy bike this summer to learn on... then by the end of summer or begining of next summer you can buy a better bike you wont thrash and feel more confident riding on.
I have had a ton of scarey experiences but with experience you learn to deal with them and controll... mine are usually the sudden stops where your sliding in the rain... I use my bike mainly just for commuting soo i can use the carpool lane cause I hate traffic. 15 mins vs 40 mins
o yeah currently riding a 2003 kawasaki zx636r
I say no cruisers those bikes are always soo heavy. and for old men any way.
