Pieces are shifted around all equalling the same amount of area taken. the partial squares covered by the piece of triangles moved will easily fill the space out from the VISUALLY but non caculated missing piece. it's a visual effect.

2) The area of the two "triangles" is the same. the two big triangles are not actually triangles, they just look like it. the slope of the hypotenuse on the red and blue small triangles is different. the red triangle is 2/5 and the blue triangle is slightly smaller with 3/8. because the two small triangles have different angles and the large triangles are not actually real triangles, the hole appears when the shapes are rearranged.

your number 2 answer is the best one ive heard, and sums it up pretty well. Yes, its true - the big triangle doesnt form a perfect triangle, but the other 2 actually are true triangles. The difference in the slope is what actually causes the hole to form.
A lot of people came up with answers that were very close, but didnt really explain themselves very well.
Good job, here is a free cookie to go with your sandwich.
