This was written in the Daily Record (Ellensburg, Washington paper) on
Wed.
Oct. 6, 2004. It was written by Mathew Manweller who is a Central
Washington University political science professor.
The title of the article was "Election determines fate of nation."
"In that this will be my last column before the presidential election
there
will be no sarcasm, no attempts at witty repartee.
The topic is too serious, and the stakes are too high. This November we
will vote in the only election during our lifetime that will truly
matter.
Because America is at a once-in-a-generation crossroads, more than an
election hangs in the balance.
Down one path lies retreat, abdication and a reign of ambivalence. Down
the other lies a nation that is aware of its past and accepts the
daunting
obligation its future demands. If we choose poorly, the consequences
will
echo through the next 50 years of history.
If we, in a spasm of frustration, turn out the current occupant of the
White House, the message to the world and ourselves will be twofold.
First, we will reject the notion that America can do big things. Once a
nation that tamed a frontier, stood down the Nazis and stood upon the
moon,
we will announce to the world that bringing democracy to the Middle East
is
too big of a task for us. But more significantly, we will signal to
future
presidents that as voters, we are unwilling to tackle difficult
challenges,
preferring caution to boldness, embracing the mediocrity that has
characterized other civilizations.
The defeat of President Bush will send a chilling message to future
presidents who may need to make difficult, yet unpopular decisions.
America has always been a nation that rises to the demands of history
regardless of the costs or appeal. If we turn away from that legacy, we
turn away from who we are. Second, we inform every terrorist
organization
on the globe that the lesson of Somalia was well learned. In Somalia we
showed terrorists that you don't need to defeat America on the
battlefield
when you can defeat them in the newsroom. They learned that a wounded
America can become a defeated America. Twenty-four-hour news stations
and
daily tracing polls will do the heavy lifting, turning a cut into a
fatal
blow. Except that Iraq is Somalia times 10.
The election of John Kerry will serve notice to every terrorist in every
cave that the soft underbelly of American power is the timidity of
American
voters. Terrorists will know that a steady stream of grizzly photos for
CNN
is all you need to break the will of the American people. Our own
self-doubt will take it from there.
Bin Laden will recognize that he can topple any American administration
without setting foot on the homeland.
It is said that America's WW II generation is its 'greatest generation.'
But my greatest fear is that it will become known as America's 'last
generation'. Born in the bleakness of the Great Depression and
hardened
in the fire of WW II, they may be the last American generation that
understands the meaning of duty, honor and sacrifice. It is difficult to
admit, but I know these terms are spoken with only hollow detachment by
many (but not all) in my generation. Too many citizens today mistake
'living in America' as 'being an American'. But America has always been
more of an idea than a place. When you sign on, you do more than buy
real
estate. You accept a set of values and responsibilities.
This November, my generation, which has been absent too long, must grasp
the obligation that comes with being an American, or fade into the
oblivion
they may deserve. I believe that 100 years from now historians will
look
back at the election of 2004 and see it as the decisive election of our
century.
Depending on the outcome, they will describe it as the moment America
joined the ranks of ordinary nations; or they will describe it as the
moment the prodigal sons and daughters of the greatest generation
accepted
their burden as caretakers of the City on the Hill."

for every one of those, there is an opposite spew, with the names reversed.
I believe this election will in fact go down in history as the end of the truth having any meaning, the end of reality having any reason, and the start of electioneering by 15 second soundbites fed to news stations. It will be known as the election where the Micheal Moores can use editting magic to create a new reality, and Swift Boat Vetrans For Truth can create fantasy truths, which become retroactive truths.
I've seen the doctored images (Jane fonda speech with Kerry photoshopped into it so it looks like he was there speaking with her in the early 70's. Bush making a speech to "cloned" soldiers, photo shopped into the background.).
This election will signal the death of the truth, the death of reality, and the beginning of using a wall of noise as the best effective election tool.
Repeat it often enough, it becomes the new truth.
Never use sentences over 20 seconds, as they don't fit into the newscasts layout. Make sure you put a humdinger zinger at the end of it to give it repeat airplay.
Catchy phrases which end with a derogatory comment beats out any kind of intelligent analysis today.
Feed the drivethrough masses, with drivethrough speed soundbites. They'll eat them up and supersize it.
It's sad.
Yes, I believe it will be remembered, but not for any lofty grandious reasons.
You have your soundbite man, you dig him, you've posted a good load of truthware for him. And some other guy somewhere is posting similar crud with the names reversed. All deisgned to keep people from thinking for themselves as they are too busy in rushhour traffic heading to wendys for a lunch combo so they can get back to the office for that meeting.
Everyone can believe what they want and roll with their own filtered new-truth, I'll just sit on the sidelines and cringe at the absurdity of it all.

Good post Gore.
I agree with the writer, I just wish i was half as articulate.
As Arioch said one is being written about John Kerry on the opposing view.
How Bush is comparable to Hitler causing millions and millions of murderous acts, creating death camps to further his agenda of genocide.
An article is being written "Bush loves Fascism" about how his administration is much that of Moosalini's and Stalin's.
An article is being written right now about how Bush lied about flu vaccines and the privatizing of social security.
An article is being written about how "dumb" the president is because he cant intelligently articulate his words to the arrogant yet important pinkos, or neo-socialists of the former US in front of millions of people, the press, and during debates.
An article is being written right now how Bush didnt serve his country and Kerry did honorably.
An article is being written right now about how Bush underfunded our troops by not giving them 87 billion needed dollars for our military.
An article is being written about how Bush purposely mislead our nation into the take over of 2 prosperous nations.
An article is being written about how Bush didnt stop the 9/11 attacks.
An article is being written about Bush's lack of bilateral talks with N. Korea.
An article is being written right now about how Bush took down a saint named Saddam, and killed the future of Iraq, Qusay and Usay.
Most that is written about Kerry is really about what Bush hasnt, isnt, or did do wrong. It isnt about the great leader Kerry is, or plans to be.
Right now a Kerry sign is being pulled out while a Bush sign is replaced.

Bush has my vote 2004.

This is probably the most inspiring part of the article. Problem is, times change. The differnce between WWII and WWIII? WWIII will be fought savagley, with much more powerful weapons, Iraq is hell.
I dont know who has been there and who has heard the stories, but under the stories i hear, this is much more like vietnam then the french beaches.
a friend of mine that was over there said this
"I liked it when the iraqis would shoot at me, i knew where they were, with tequla in my camel pack, i always shot them on their backs."

I thought both candidates said that the Draft is a non issue? Meaning they have no intentions of bringing it back.
The other night, what do I see? A party, with everyone being happy. The boy friend is talking about his future. His girl friends said, "Well that's if you don't get drafted..."
WTF is that crap? I honestly can't wait for this shit to end. I hate election years. I hate watching the news. The commercials are almost commedy right now. Too bad the majority of the idiot masses actually put value and belief into them.
