yup, it's a difficult tightrope walk going on there.
Unfortunately, if the insurgents blow up a marketplace, the US gets blamed for it. A very tenuous situation to be in.
One could argue that by disbanding the military & police, one inherits their responsibility, that can be debated for years. The unfortunate side effect is that one bad occurance gets more airplay on al jizzoleerra than 100 good things (they learned how to do news from us too well, bad news = great ratings).
If it was total war, they would be completely creamed into the stoneage in about a week. There wouldn't be 2 cinderblocks stuck together, and nobody would have all of their limbs.
unfortunately, that would likely make the "we came there to save you and give you a better life" argument a tad null & void (reason to go there #23).

That as soon as our election is done with the Iraqi PM is going to declare martial Law in the cities that are problem areas and start house by house searches. It is in those areas that the insurgents need to be made the cause of the problems for the regular folks who are afraid. Until that happens we are just biding time.

I think the Draft is a definate possibility if the occupation of Iraq continues and other serious threats such as Iran need attention. Check out this article from Colorado Rocky Mountain News. It seems the army has been "suggesting" that GIs enlist for another 3 years or else they will get sent to Iraq.

It is pretty clear we don't have the troops we need to control Iraq and hunt for Osama. We have completed training of only 5000 or so Iraqi troops in Iraq so far so the brunt of the peacekeeping will continue to rest on the shoulders of the good old USA. Add in the fact that the Brits are planning a slow withrdrawl of their troops as well. Then add a third front (Iran, N. Korea) and we either have to start paying soldiers a lot more and increase recruiting or start some form of a draft.

Watch a documentary flim over 2 years by Iranian students. The movement is for democracy, but EVEN they state over a slow time. They want rights, but at the same time want to preserve the Mulim way of life and their values. I didn't see American way of life, but I did see Rap Records and the right to buy what they want. So its cloudy. Do they want it all or just enough to remain as they are.
