In the 1960's the U.S. began a love-hate relationship with Saddam Hussien that has lasted until he thought he was given a gren light to invade, silly him. A CIA coup was orchestrated, with the Bathe Party being put in power. Dis with ANY attempt to look at the docuements in the late 60's and earlry 70's can show you this. But most of the focus back then was on Nam. When the Shah of Iran was overthrown in 1979, the U.S. kicked in cash and armed Iraqs military in order to fight Iran. Ever hear of Contra affair, Oliver North and such ? Over one million men died in that long 8-year war. And the Iraqi bad dude Sadam had lots of gas and shit now to kill 1000's of people with ! Cool !
So why did things go bad, Sadam was on top of the world right ? Well kinda, he still owned a country, but the US and Arab countries with OIL run the show.
At the end of that conflict, Iraq was in bad shape. When Kuwait lowered the price of oil and produced more then its allotted share, Iraq lost 1/3 of its oil revenues. Sadam felt that Kuwait, who had in the past been a part of Iraq, was creating problems for his country. Sadam told the us, maken it known to the U.S. he was going to invade or, he had threatened force against Kuwait, the U.S. response was that it had no plans to defend Kuwait against Iraq. Alright, a Civil war sorta. Kinda like Isreal saying hey, this is our land right ? No fighting from the US or the UN since the US runs that show [ well did ] ! Hussein felt this was a green light for the invasion.
Wrong for him. 2 wars later, 10 years of sanctions and constant bombing, rants and more he finally was toppled and with that 1000's more killed.
