someone on this board has to have an opinion on them?
i'm looking for something that hopefully plays flac files.. ipod does this but you have to use apple's proprietary format, which means i'd have to take a hell of a fucking lot of time converting everything over from flac to aac.
are there mp3 players that you can install new codec type things on them? so if they dont recognize flac i can make them do so?

but as far as mp3 players go.... I got the i-river 120 which I like alot.... though the ipod is kinda cool with the circly like thingofabob on the front but other then that it doesn't have a cool lcd remote....
and it actually comes with all the cables that you need to use it unless you for some reason are the rare person with a firewire card... or for some reason your a idiot and bought a mac...

Firewire is not that rare on even PCs these days. 1394 is now fairly commonplace. Though 4 pin firewire still doesn't help all that much.
And though I use PCs Macs are pretty fucking cool man. They just need to quit raping people on the prices. All in all though, just because you are a Mac user does not mean you are an idiot. Accentric yes, idiot no... In a perfect world software and games would all be written for Mac (or another open source kernel) and tha OS would be 94% of the market. After being around Macs quite a bit repairing them and administrating some, you find that they are easier to use and have WAY better applications available.
Until then, I will stick with my Dell Laptop and my three PC desktops.

is it possible to make the players recognize formats beyond what they are supposed to be playing?

only thing better about macs is the big indian little indian thing... that is all.... and yes firewire is still pretty rare.... I could pull up any number of websites on mobo manufactures and they wont have firewire built in... most likely if you need firewire you only have a camcorder and you will need to buy a pci card for it... or you have a Ipod cause they dont come with a usb cable! (300 dollar player and they can't include a usb cable for the largest computer segment)
might talk alot of shit about windows but its the most compatible operating system out there.... with all the wide variety of hardware and software.... it still holds up pretty good....
macs might have pretty designs and easy of use.... but using a mac I feel like I have no control.... im just meerly there for the ride. and not actually driving...
o yeah dont bring mac experience into this either.... I have 5 years of mac experience.... nothing with OS/X but still.... I hated working on those pieces of shit.... i mean come on WHAT THE FUCK IS REBUILDING THE DESKTOP!!! thats the cure for every thing on a fucking mac... oh oh i can't connect to the interweb. One sec while I rebuild the desktop!!!@!@#!@#
any way you might want to recall to Vesper and FINISH CHOPPING MY 10K LOGS!! actually you know what.... now that I had to rebuttle against macs make that 20K LOGS!! and I dont want to catch you making shit out of it either!
