Learn to defend yourself properly. It is just not possible for somebody to sucker punch me, or pull out any type of weapon on me while they are that close. Getting that close to somebody puts you at a huge disadvantage, not an advantage.

Rainman's right, I bounce periodically for several nighclubs and I can say this, every single person backs up a step before they take their shot. Staying in close like that does neither of them any good. In fact, a good wrestler would be able to throw down, but for throwing punches or using weapons, being up close is no good.
I don't get excited like that when someone decides to get buck wild. Let em do their shit, when they get tired of it they can either step up to the plate or shut the fuck up. Of course not many people like to tangle so I use size to stay out of it mostly, but if someone decides to dance, a pair of 21s awaits them.
As far as the sucker punching mook goes, it is common knowledge that if someone maneuvers long enough they will eventually get on your visual blind side. The trick is to be aware enough to hear what is going on around you and be ready to react on an instant.
I can see Rainman has been in and around this stuff to know what he is doing, you might do well to listen to him. I know I have been around it enough to know he is right.

This I know from experience, I am 6'7, 280 lbs, noone would be dumb enough to get close to me. I've been in many fights, and the worst thing you can do is let a wrestler type like me get in close with my Akido.
Not a single person I've ever fought, knew how to fight. Some day I'd like to actually fight somone who knows what the fuck they're doing, and doesn't usually go down in one punch.
Something very few people realize when fighting me, is I take advantage of a persons balance, and I use my weight to put them at a disadvantage.
The last fight I got into, I bent some mexican guys arm backwards, after I dodged his left hook. I then put him into a full headlock, jumped up on him with both of my legs over the top of his shins, and leaned forward, he had nothing to break, or catch his fall, and he went face first into the concrete, after that the fight was basically over, I think I broke his nose. I got out of there before the cops came. That was like a year ago or so, havn't had a fight since.
But that worthless negro obviously can't fight for shit, especially if he makes a cheap shot to the side of the face like that. Any kind of full impact like that will temporarily shut the brain down, not to mention the potential damage to the spinal cord, such an impact like that can slip a disk.
Not even a big guy like me probably could of taken a shot like that, it was very well placed.

Most martial artists will tell you that the best upclose combat is straight out wrestling. Once a good wrestler gets you down to the ground, your fucked, and most good wrestlers wont have a problem getting you on the floor. (Not that highschool wrestling bullshit, but wrestling more indepth with actual martial arts)
