Even though I own one american, and one import, any 1985+ model Toyota is the most reliable source of transportation. They may not suffice in looks, or have many high performance models, but I can guarentee you they won't break down like a peice of shit Chevy.
I hate Chevy with a passion, anyone dumb enough to own one, should be shot. Ford is okay, if it's a TRUCK, otherwise you should jump off a cliff if you decide to buy anything else made by Ford.
I can't say much about Dodge, since I havn't had any problems with my 99 RAM, but I can guarentee any older Dodge is a complete peice of shit.
Stay away from expensive imports, and make sure you have full coverage insurance if you intend on buying one.
I think for reliability purposes, a Toyota will last a life time. My mom bought her 1988 4 door Toyota Corolla back in 1987 when it was brand new, and that car hasn't had a problem with it since we bought it. Has 120k miles on it, and STILL hasn't had a tune-up.
My dad owns a Toyota Tundra, and his lease is expiring on it, and I'll probably sell my truck for it. It doesn't have the looks, but it has a 4.7 ltr. Lexus V-8, with the racing package, and it will blow the doors off my truck any day.
Initially I'd hate to support any import of any kind, but you just can't beat Toyota for reliability purposes.

also Nissans.
I had a 91 celica, put 200k on it, no probs. At 200k I still had the original clutch in it.
Also have had Nissans, no probs with em. Never had any good fortunes with anything domestic (have had buick, ford etc... all bad experiences).

Shit i would say get any import nissan, honda, toyota not mitsu though...they all last forever.I have a 1989 240sx and it has 248k miles on it and still runs fine and a 94 altima that has 148k and runs great. If your going to get a domestic only get chevy or ford trucks they last along time...I personally haven't run into any problems with chevys ive seen many with over 150k og engine miles on them they are great trucks.

says they have over 100k miles on the engines and they still run like champs. If you're just looking for a mode of reliable transportation I'd say go that route. if you want something flashy, well I dont know.. not much you can get for under 10 grand.

unless you're really an offroader or just have to have the "I'm a jeep driver" look then fuck em. They suck.
