I want to record multitrack songs with my guitar and possibly synthesized drums. I'm thinking something on the same level as sound forge, except i didn't like sound forge. anyone got any good ideas?

Protools or cubase.
You can get a free version of Protools if you have Windows 98.

you said a program that you could record w/. For import, Pro Tools uses only AIFF files (uncompressed audio) and MAYBE .wav(can't remember) but you have to convert it within Pro Tools. If you're talking about downloading a proggy then Pro Tools wouldn't be what you're looking for even though it's the best (you get what you pay for). Try maybe Sonar. Like I said the only free and downloadable version for Pro Tools works on win '98 and ME only.
There's a ton of other ones you can download but they'll all be limited.
If you want to "invest" then I'd suggest starting off with the Mbox (you get pro tools free) and it'll run you under $500

Flee asked what would be a good program for recording multitrack songs, and by far Pro Tools is the best thing out there hands down. You're not paying for the software, you're paying for the hardware and the software comes free. Audio recording is much more than getting a piece of software, unless of course you try and code a #1 techno hit. OR if you record your music outside of your computer and just import the .aiff or .wav files.
Cool Edit is not so bad, it's actually Adobe Audition now, but thing is it works with DSP effects as opposed to TDM. DSP = render before preview, TDM = no render. Even with this program you would still need a mixer that could run about $100-$300. Recording directly into your soundcard = shitty, but hey it's just a suggestion.
Basically, I know my shit, and if you want good quality you're gonna have to do more than just download the software.

Can I get rid of audio voice tracks in audition? I have audition but dont know how to keep the backround music or beat and lose the lyrics.
For instance, if I could get rid of a whiny ass rapper and keep his cool ass beat without hearing his voice.
