I don't even believe in God let alone any organized whacko religion.

For your information, Kumbaya is best sang like Bob Dylan but really really fast with a barber shop quartet rap kind of punk gregorian country twang.

Most would be a strong word, I think. After my 4 years of talking about this subject in the AF, more of the younger guys than not only joined for the school money, and many of the ones who stay in after the 4 years only do so because they are too afraid to get out and compete in the job market. Then they get pissy when they actually have to fight or do shitty, thankless work because they "just joined for the school money".

If you're looking for school money alone, and you don't have a desire to serve, don't torture yourself. If you'd like the opportunity to get both money for school and the pride and satisfaction of having served your country (or even make a career of it), then go for it.

I have had a number of friends who have and I'm proud of them no matter what their reasons were for joining. Simply, they came out of the process better people for having done so. In this era of world issues, people can beat around back and forth all they like about Bush this, US that, and what we should or should not be doing. That being said, I have always felt nothing but admiration, pride, and respect for the stand up individuals who serve our country.

1) People can't take care of themselves, so they need someone to force em to do it. *Dur, yes dur!*

2) They can't afford school, but want to go... so they accept the military's offer of paying for school.

3) .... uhh... what was tax's reason again?

actually since I have 2 University degrees i'll be getting an officers commission, and whether you believe it or not, I'm more then capable of taking care of myself. I've dealt with more shit then most people here have seen in movies.
I'll also be going career. 20 years service with a full pension and retire at 45... most of you fucks wish you could do that.
and my reasons are a desire to serve my country, to take responsibility for the freedoms the rest of you take for granted, and a desire to kill bad guys.

you can retire at 45 and not join the military.
why do you have the desire to serve your country? what has your country done for you personally that needs to be repaid?

My country is just more then a set of political and social ideals, it's my family, friends, and society in general. I owe everyone I know something.
Think of it this way. You probably have a friend who you'd back in a fight no matter what. Even if you're gona be fighting 8 people to just you 2, you're loyal enough to throw down with the guy whatever the odds, and whether hes right or wrong. Now just take that a step further. You'd back up your family right? More then one friend you'd stand with?
It's hard to explain. To me it's just a mindset that I'm grateful for every opportunity I've been given, and I'm proud to live in the country I do, and I want to give something back. I've always been interested in the military, and recently, I just put 2 and 2 together.
