I agree with you on ISIS being scary. That's why I said there's nothing scarier than the thought of a WMD in the hands of someone who doesn't give a shit if everyone dies, including themselves. I think they actually believe they'd be rewarded for that in the afterlife, right?
But at the end of the day, ISIS doesn't have nukes. Or long range missiles of any kind. They're using weapons from decades past. They have no air force, no navy. While they are certainly committing a host of atrocities in the middle east, are definitely negatively impacting the oil trade, and while I agree that every last one of them should be exterminated with extreme prejudice, they aren't really capable of doing much serious damage to any country with a well trained and well equipped military. They are really only a threat to the people in the geographic regions where they are immediately located. Let's hope those in charge are able to continue to keep nuclear technology and other WMD's out of their hands.
I agree with you that Russia is not interested in mutually assured destruction. However, they definitely throw their weight around. Crimea being a perfect example. While I doubt Russia would engage in outright war with us, I'd be surprised if propping up Al-Assad and the Crimea annexation are the last stunts they will pull. They've made it pretty clear that they aren't afraid of us and will pursue their own agenda whether it conflicts with US interests or not. On that note, I think they have a far greater global influence than ISIS ever will. The only reason ISIS is even still around is because I think our country as a whole is not interested in another war in the middle east.
