They may push for the technology (and Japan seems to love anything new and innovative) but it will ultimately be the consumer that decides and right now there isn't a demand for it. There was a surge when Avatar first came out but since then things have petered out.
Several theaters I've been to recently charge the same amount for a 3d show as a 2d. Hugo is a good example of this. The 3d is quite well done yet the 2d showings are seeing higher numbers in spite of the same price and show times.
Gaming might change that, but it's far to early to call.
Oh, and those TV's you mentioned that are in Japan are already up here in Canada. They're probably floating around down there too. It's early technology, sure, but so far the look isn't that impressive.
3D is such a gimmicky technology, it's been around forever and has never really 'taken off'. It's a fad, and there's basically no consumer demand for it. When going to the theater I almost always opt for the 2D version. Although I do see some gaming potential with it.
You have to ask yourself if you, "have to have!" this technology, and are willing to upgrade your current TV for a gimmicky feature. Comparing 3D with HD is idiotic... We will always be striving for better visual quality in TVs. That's always been the natural progression for TV tech.
Unless I get some "help me obi wan kenobe you're my only hope," or tennis playing, spandex wearing hoe via Total Recall 3D projection type shit, I wont be upgrading. If you want to sit in your living room with your stupid glasses like an asshole watching ESPN just to realize your dream of viewing balls flying at your face then that's your prerogative.
I've often thought it funny that they advertise high definition on lower definition settings. That was the first ad that was effective. Really effective.
Auth]Everything is moving towards 3D...you'll have the capability, but for those who don't want it they can disable the function.
Anyone look into Xbox 720 (aka Xbox Loop)? Looks to be heavily favouring kinect 2, which will even be able to read facial expression and lip movement.
This. Went to a buddies who had a nice new Samsung 3D TV with the newer goggles and it was pretty sweet. It is moving towards 3D just like HDTV at one point. Just like Blu Ray still is taking over DVDs etc etc.
