Friend of mine is in the Navy, and is about to be done with her active duty. I think she has 2 years of reserves(one weekend a month thing if i remember right), and they are telling her there's a 90% chance she'll be called back into duty during this time if she doesnt re-enlist for another 2 years.

Advice for her?

I am far from an expert Obs but on the surface it seems they are strong arming her.

If she stays in reserves, she can get called back but her commitment is not open ended. She could go for 6 months and then be back in the reserve position.

If she re-enlists then she is on active duty on base or in theatre for the whole two years. 100% committed.

Now I am probably wrong so let the experts who have served give you real advice.

I cant speak for the navy I'm really not sure about their op tempo, but if she was Army reserves there would be a good chance of her getting deployed. IRR call ups are very very rare now a days, every branch of the military is hitting their recruitment goals right now so I have been hearing less and less of people getting called back from IRR. Obviously it depends on if she's in a highly critical job specialty or not. You may want to direct her towards www.military.com to the community section discussion boards, and then to the Navy discussion board. I'm sure there are people who are actually in the Navy that can help her there.

Depends on her rate. It is highly unlikely that she would be called up from the reserves unless you was an airplane mechanic on a carrier. I did 8 years in the Navy and my brother is on his 16th year in the Navy so we have some experience with the process.

As with all things in the military her orders will be based on the needs of the Navy. If she is an Arabic speaking CT then she may be activated.

something of note that might be considered or consider looking further into...is reserves plainly sucks dick. first couple steps of war historically speaking in the last few decades has been..step 1 send in the marines and get lay of the land, lock-down key points, army backs them up...take out a shit ton of troops and replace them with reserves (which is usually when we lose the most people, especially our middle east invasion).

whenever we lose significant numbers (regardless of how (in)accurate the beginning part of the original statement is) it's reserves. usually they're rusty, older, fatter..and just bad news for them. at least in the last 20-30 years. if you go into the reserves because you are tired of being in the military, you have to consider how much worse it would be a year or two out of practice, or more than that and hopping back in..especially considering if you're called back in for reserves it's pretty clear what that's going to entail.

my brother was in the marines and the same shit happened to him, he did the 2 extra years to avoid the reserves for these reasons. he was in the middle east round 1 early 90s. if you check out the bottom of this page you can see there's a pretty big gap between living veterans and total servicemembers that aren't accounted for. not saying that's the death toll, just hard to be accurate when the acquirable information is full of holes. think it's the "what the public doesn't know won't hurt them" clause.
