I built a new gaming rig about 3-4 months ago and I have been loving it up until my Seagate 1 Terabyte HDD failed. It would not even power up, which meant that it was not recognized in the BIOS and also meant that I will not be able to recover any information from it. The only way I could find would be to have a data recovery company open it up in a clean room which would cost $1800.
I have my replacement drive now and I want to make sure that I never lose any information again. Anyone have any suggestions for backing up data? I want something that will automatically back up my music, photos, bookmarks, documents, ect. Should I get an external drive? Is there something built into Vista that would back up the information automatically or will I need software as well?

I use two methods. External drive for the majority of my stuff, and off-site backup for all the stuff I don't want to lose at all. You could always setup a RAID1 array, and store your stuff there.
Yeah, platter exchanges suck, but you can't expect much more than a failure from the bleeding edge hard drives (At least that's how it's been since 500GB drives came out).

You can, when the BIOS recognizes the drive. Replacing the HD controller might do the trick, but not always.

External HDD is sounding like the best idea right now. Any specific brands you recommend for an external drive? Also, will I need any software for automatic back up of folders?

Just get an external drive, and vista has sync center that you can use to sync folders. That should be enough for anyone. Unless you live in an area prone to flooding or fires.
Or as someone mentioned setup a Raid using two drives.
The external drive method comes with the added bonus of your data being portable if you want to take it with you somewhere.

Accessories->System Tools->Backup on vista. You can schedule it to backup to the external drive daily at a certain time, or weekly...however you want. Also, just about any external hd you get will come with a program that does the same thing. As for brands just about any of them work alright. I don't really like the Western Digital My Book series, but a lot of people swear by them. My Book
