Alright. Travian is ruining my sleeping. I woke up 2 hours before my alarm clock on my day off just because I knew my resources would be over my cranny limit. Anyway...
No fucking politics or current day political bullshit. Let's assume we don't nuke ourselves, terrorists eat us all alive, or Jesus comes back by then.
Now I'm bored and high. Has anyone ever read anything by Ray Kurzwell? Well before I even read his book, about 6 years ago, I believed in the same curve of technological advancement. Kurzwell is a futurist. His theories are a little more than just randomly picking them out of a hat. He uses a lot of math. Then guesses how it will influence or change our lives. Read about him here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Kurzwell
He says that by 2019 a $1,000 personal computer has as much raw power as the human brain. I've heard other futurists say 2021. What does it mean when you have a home PC with the power of a human brain? This is some fo the crazy shit Kurzweil predicts.
Quote:
Computers are embedded everywhere in the environment (inside of furniture, jewelry, walls, clothing, etc.).
People experience 3-D virtual reality through glasses and contact lenses that beam images directly to their retinas (retinal display). Coupled with an auditory source (headphones), users can remotely communicate with other people and access the Internet.
People communicate with their computers via two-way speech and gestures instead of with keyboards.
"Nanoengineered machines" begin to be used in manufacturing.
Devices that deliver sensations to the skin surface of their users (i.e.--tight body suits and gloves) are also sometimes used in virtual reality to complete the experience. "Virtual sex"--in which two people are able to have sex with each other through virtual reality, or in which a human can have sex with a "simulated" partner that only exists on a computer--becomes a reality.
Computers have made paper books and documents almost completely obsolete. The latter are rarely used for anything.
Schools rely upon adaptive, highly advanced computerized learning programs in place of human teachers.
Computers are also found inside of some humans in the form of cybernetic implants. These are most commonly used by disabled people to regain normal physical faculties (i.e. - Retinal implants allow the blind to see and spinal implants coupled with mechanical legs allow the paralyzed to walk).
Most business transactions or information inquiries involve dealing with a simulated person.
Most roads now have automated driving systems--networks of monitoring and communication devices that allow computer-controlled automobiles to safely navigate.
Human-robot relationships begin as simulated personalities become more convincing.
Virtual artists--creative computers capable of making their own art and music--emerge in all fields of the arts.
While a growing number of humans believe that their computers and the simulated personalities they interact with are intelligent to the point of human-level consciousness, experts are dismissive that any are capable of passing the Turing Test.
Ubiquitous connectivity high bandwidth communications connection to the Internet at all times
Full immersion visual-auditory virtual reality
Augmented real reality
Interaction with virtual personalities as a primary interface
Effective language technologies (natural language processing, speech recognition, speech synthesis)

Not crazy enough for you? Well Kurzweil believes that our technology is exponential. Take a look what he says about only 10 years later.
Quote:
2029
A $1,000 personal computer is 1,000 times more powerful than the human brain
The eyeglasses and headphones that used to deliver virtual reality are now obsolete thanks to computer implants that go into the eyes and ears. The implants are either permanent or removable. They allow direct interface with computers, communications and Internet-based applications.
Computer implants designed for direct connection to the brain are also available. They are capable of augmenting natural senses and of enhancing higher brain functions like memory, learning speed and overall intelligence.
Computers are now capable of learning and creating new knowledge entirely on their own and with no human help. By scanning the enormous content of the Internet, some computers "know" literally every single piece of public information (every scientific discovery, every book and movie, every public statement, etc.) generated by human beings.
Direct brain implants allow users to enter full-immersion virtual reality--with complete sensory stimulation--without any external equipment. People can have their minds in a totally different place at any moment. This technology is in widespread use.
Most communication occurs between humans and machines as opposed to human-to-human.
The manufacturing, agricultural and transportation sectors of the economy are almost entirely automated and employ very few humans. Across the world, poverty, war and disease are almost nonexistent thanks to technology alleviating want.
The rise of Artificial Intelligence creates a real "robot rights" movement, and there is open, public debate over what sorts of civil rights and legal protections machines should have. The existence of humans with heavy levels of cybernetic augmentation and of larger numbers of other people with less extreme cybernetic implants lead to further arguments over what constitutes a "human being."
Although computers routinely pass the Turing Test, controversy still persists over whether machines are as intelligent as humans in all areas.
Artificial Intelligences claim to be conscious and openly petition for recognition of the fact. Most people admit and accept this new truth.
Reverse engineering of the human brain completed
Non-biological intelligence combines the subtlety and pattern recognition strength of human intelligence, with the speed, memory, and knowledge sharing of machine intelligence
Non-biological intelligence will continue to grow exponentially whereas biological intelligence is effectively fixed

Even if we see half of that, would make for a very interesting future. Good news is we all get to live long enough to see what happens for ourselves.
His outlook for further into the future starts going into nanotechnology. Computers placed in our brain that can communicate wirelessly with other people. Creating a living internet. The computers in your brain will be 1000 times more powerful than your brain. So people who aren't "hooked up" won't be able to communicate with you on the same level. What point do we lose our humanity?
What are your theories? What do you think we will do with our massive computing power when it is available?

sounds like Minority Report.
It definately sounds probable and I've thought to myself how much further we will go. If this actually comes to fruition, life will be so much different than it is now. Though some aspects could be useful, i.e peace on earth etc, he makes it sound like we will be sacrificing a lot of freedom unknowingly by letting these computers run our lives. It's a scary thing to be dependent on something that could let us down at any moment.
Does he mention anything about space travel or universe exploration?

Do you know how much negative effect this would have on society? I personally believe that we will stop at a certain point in tech development on the sole purpose that it would truly rule our lives. We would be completely dependent on it, and if it ever failed, we wouldn't have the personel qualified to get us out of that hole. It would destroy our employment rate, our security, and most of all our freedoms.

At least 10 times a day when I ask someone what operating system they have, I hear "uhhh it's a Dell"
I'm not real impressed with the human brain

seriously though, there is no question that there will be amazing things in the future. what date that will be is the unknown. i dont think it will be that soon. and on that matter-when people talk about these things, they always talk about the immediate future or the next 50 to 100 years. yeah thats cool but I want to known what life is going to be like 6000, 100,000, and a million years for now. Im not worried though, I will get to see it, because I plan on getting frozen when i die.
the ultimate goal of mankind is to become gods. we will at some point, live forever and have whatever we desire.

Nice link... Is thatfrom 6 years ago? Good shit.
I think you are underestimating how fast technology is growing. I think we will see everything you said in that post in our life times. You won't need to freeze yourself when you die. If you live to 70-80 years old you will be in the time frame that some refer to as "singularity". Of course this is heavily disputed. The technology getting to that point isn't disputed, however the ethics is.
Like skunk was saying. There will be a LOT of people against it. If any goverment is in charge of it, it is over for personal freedoms. If it is something independant then it is the key to living forever.
Once we know how the brain works, we can just put all your memories, feelings, and who you are. What some people may call a "soul". Place that on a 3.5" floppy. If you die or get killed. Just your physical body will die. They will just plug your info into a new machine/body.
Because of this, computers will claim to be human, technically they will be right. There also may be rare instances where there are two of you in existence. Would killing one of them just be removing a duplicate or murder?

if they did it that way-that wouldnt be me, it would just be a clone of me who had my thoughts and feelings. I would still be dead once my brain is dead. If they invented teleportation that worked that way, that would be the same thing too. Definintely do not want that. If they could make new bodies but transfer your brain into them, that would work. But yeah, I know theres gonna be some group that will try to fuck this up.

This whole post made me keep thinking back to the anime/manga "Ghost in the shell: Stand alone complex" if anyone has seen / read that. In this anime, its the near future where basically humans are more machine than man, with more cybernetic implants and prosthetics than you can imagine. They basically can "speak" to each other, as though they are on cellphones, but without a cellphone, without their hands, without moving their lips. It's almost like telepathy. And they are all faster, stronger, more agile and swift in all their actions. It's a stretch, but i think the future will be a little like that, but less exaggerated.
