Why isn't economics something that can be casually discussed? I'm sorry but corporations are for profit, if you want to benefit society then you create a NOT-FOR-PROFIT business. You should be on your knees and thanking Friedman for the independence the Fed has been given in conducting monetary policy, in fact I would rather have Helen Keller with a bottle of E&J conducting monetary policy than the government. Politicians only look at short term monetary gain to make their term look impressive, in the long run society is harmed.
Not too long ago you were all gung ho for the progress of U.S. economy and critical of usurping Chinese economy, yet your ideals are more characteristic of the People's Bank of China. HOW IN THE WORLD are people hurt by corporations profiting? People are better off through competitive businesses. Corporations must find the brightest and best workers and that means offering competitive wages and benefits. If you look at Costco and then Walmart you'll see Costco pays considerably higher and offers benefits, and has a substantially less amount of turnover than Walmart. And not surprisingly they have a higher ROI. If you had your government run monetary policy right now inflation and interest rates would be through the roof because of the war on terror, and so would unemployment.
Maybe what you seek is a more communist regime where government has a monopoly on all business. Everyone has their price and U.S. corporations pay the best, maybe that's why we are dominating the global market for the time being?
Economics does not seem to be your forte, maybe you should at least take a 101 class before you criticize someones life line... guaranteed he's done more for the U.S. economy than politicians ever have. Aside from Katrina when was the last time you've seen politicians pump our tax money into something that mattered?
