They aren't typically aggressive either. I always thought it would be a snake.

Is there a video anywhere of the incident happening (since it was being filmed at the time).

There is footage, apparently, you can see him get hit, he pulls the sting out of his chest, and dies almost immediatly after.
Edit: this is how the camerman decribed it "he pulled it out of his chest, and then, he was gone"

On the one hand, Irwin's death was a tragedy on many levels. The guy did a lot to raise environmental awareness not only in Australia but globally. It's also extremely tragic that the guy leaves behind two young children - children who may grow up in the legacy of their father but that is not the same as growing up with their father.
On the other hand, does his death really surprise anybody? Specifically, does the manner of his death (dying to a dangerous animal) come as a surprise? I would suggest not. I'm not trying to be the callous asshole in the group but honestly, why would any intelligent person be in the least surprised at Irwin getting himself killed?
Sure, he died doing what he loved doing. And, if you are going to go (and btw we are all going to go) then you might as well go out doing what you love.
But it does seem to me that Irwin took many unnecessary chances in his life and at times was more than a touch cavalier in how he went about his business.
