Since I've already seen a few articles about 666 (tomorrow is 06/06/2006 depending on what part of the world you're from); I figured we might as well see how many different origins we can come up with. There are a few major ones that I know off the top of my head.
New Testament of the Christian bible, in the book of Revelation: "Here is wisdom. He who has understanding, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. His number is six hundred sixty-six." A popular theory is that this is a reference to the Roman ruler Nero Caesar. He used the Christians as a scapegoat for a devastating Roman fire. The Hebrew language has numerical values for its entire alphabet. Ancient Hebrew didn't use vowels. The consonants of Nero's name add up to 666. Over the years, people have used a similar method for naming Napoleon, FDR, JFK, Reagan and Clinton as the anti-Christ.
3 is considered a perfect number, as well as 7. Each having significant theological values. 6 is supposed to be imperfect, and to get 6 three times in a row would be a perfect imperfection.
I've also read something to the effect that the Babylonians assigned numbers to their gods, and if you added all of them up it equaled 666.
What are some more potential origins?
EDIT: These are all in reference to the bible as the origin of 666, but they are potential reasons why the number 666 was used.

That book of Revelations was mistranslated in one of the first translations and the number they refer to is actually 616. Of course, I can't remember where I read that article and I have been too lazy to search for it...so I will just spread heresy <img src="/~stretch/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

3 was the symbol for God.
6 was the symbol for Man.
666 is Man becoming God.
God only exists in the minds of those who believe in him. As our society advances technology we will come to believe in science fact, rather than faith. So eventually God will be dead and the world will be a better place.
To bad we will not be alive to see that happen. We created God because we feel the world revolves around ourselves. We refuse to believe that when we die we become nothing... and life still exists. How can life exist when you're dead, YOU are the center of the universe. Right?

in roman numerals it is DCLXVI (D=500 + C=100 + L=50 + X=10 + V=5 + I=1)...i figure some dude just thought it looked cool...like a countdown, similar to 54321.

I've read about the 616 and also 606. It appears that the 616 comes from the earliest copy that we have. It has only recently been legible with new technology though. The following is copied from Wikipedia:
"It should be noted that the Book of Revelation (ed:-s) was not written in Hebrew or Latin but in Greek, and virtually any name can be turned into 666 or 616 by first using an "alternative" spelling of that name in one arbitrary language and then translating that word into a second arbitrary language and then using an arbitrary set of numerology rules.
