People with some mighty big fucking balls stormed some beaches. In total, both sides, 625,000 soldiers dead, wounded, captured in the battle of Normandy.
[color:"white"]They don't mention the French. Their total's for the D-Day invasion: 177 Soldiers involved in the landing, 10 dead, 36 wounded.
Guess I wouldn't advertise it either compared to the UK,US,Cdn numbers. Hell, more polacks died in the invasion (650) then french.

Total Allied casualties on D-Day are estimated at 10,000, including 2500 dead. British casualties on D-Day have been estimated at approximately 2700. The Canadians lost 946 casualties. The US forces lost 6603 men. Note that the casualty figures for smaller units do not always add up to equal these overall figures exactly, however (this simply reflects the problems of obtaining accurate casualty statistics).
Casualties on the British beaches were roughly 1000 on Gold Beach and the same number on Sword Beach. The remainder of the British losses were amongst the airborne troops: some 600 were killed or wounded, and 600 more were missing; 100 glider pilots also became casualties. The losses of 3rd Canadian Division at Juno Beach have been given as 340 killed, 574 wounded and 47 taken prisoner.
The breakdown of US casualties was 1465 dead, 3184 wounded, 1928 missing and 26 captured. Of the total US figure, 2499 casualties were from the US airborne troops (238 of them being deaths). The casualties at Utah Beach were relatively light: 197, including 60 missing. However, the US 1st and 29th Divisions together suffered around 2000 casualties at Omaha Beach.
The total German casualties on D-Day are not known, but are estimated as being between 4000 and 9000 men.
Naval losses for June 1944 included 24 warships and 35 merchantmen or auxiliaries sunk, and a further 120 vessels damaged.
Over 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded or went missing during the Battle of Normandy. This figure includes over 209,000 Allied casualties, with nearly 37,000 dead amongst the ground forces and a further 16,714 deaths amongst the Allied air forces. Of the Allied casualties, 83,045 were from 21st Army Group (British, Canadian and Polish ground forces), 125,847 from the US ground forces. The losses of the German forces during the Battle of Normandy can only be estimated. Roughly 200,000 German troops were killed or wounded. The Allies also captured 200,000 prisoners of war (not included in the 425,000 total, above). During the fighting around the Falaise Pocket (August 1944) alone, the Germans suffered losses of around 90,000, including prisoners.
Today, twenty-seven war cemeteries hold the remains of over 110,000 dead from both sides: 77,866 German, 9386 American, 17,769 British, 5002 Canadian and 650 Poles. [color:"white"] Don't forget the 10 French guys!!!!

Everyone should say a prayer for the people who died on that day.

refresh me on history as to why the soviet union lost triple the amount of lives compared to the 2nd highest death rate nation? (poland) i know the nazi's viciously slaughtered the jews, but did stalin do even more or something?
most of the history i've learned on ww2 was really focused on the germans and the persecution of the jews. besides the fact that germany invaded russia, it really doesn't say much else...

If you look at waging war for 6 years, the number of aircraft, tanks etc....
If those were F18's, F16's, F-117's, Abrahms etc.... thousands of each. The cost would be astronomical. Probably 10's of trillions cumulatively.

The Russians have a fine history of just throwing waves of men to the frontline, often under trained and under equiped. The combination usually results in high death rates, but hey, why worry when you can always send more troops?
Stalin was responsible for the death of millions of his fellow countrymen and women, but not as a result of the War. He conducted "purges" in the Communist Party to get out the "bad apples" (i.e. anybody who opposed him). This was something that occured over the duration of his dictatorship, most of these people being sent to labor prisions in Siberia.
Sooo, Stalin can be said to have killed more people then Hitler, problem is the Communists had a habit of not keeping very good records like the Germans.
Of course, that is just the short of it. har! =P

A good example of how the soviet operated would be Stalingrad...........German and Soviet forces fought over the city reducing it to rubble. Soviet forces would issue a handfull of ammo to one soldier to carry and a rifle to a second. The first man would follow the second untill he fell then pick up the rifle, reload and carry on.
Alot of times they would be forced into fights they had no chance to win and would try to retreat.......their officers ( political officers ) standing in the rear area would kill them for this.
The Soviets used their numbers to slow down the german war machine while new factories were built, those factories produced newer weapons. The russian soldiers would burn everything they had to retreat behind so the germans had no shelter, Combine this with the winter and the turn out of new weapons the Soviets were able to turn the German assault into a rout ( it took about 27 million military and civilian lives to slow the germans down some estimate ).
the other Million or two fell in the push onto germany and berlin.

Stalin killed more people than HItler did(his country men). Supposedly right before he died he was planning his second great purge.
